Shimano Sahara problem
« on: December 30, 2008, 11:48:54 AM »
Ok maybe someone can help hopefully.

A little while back while fishing when I would stop reeling and then when I would  go to restart it would be hard to turn the handle at first, then would work fine until I stopped reeling and started again.
I took off the handle and dropped some oil in when I got home and it seemed to work, well I used the reel this weekend and same problem.
I haven't used it since the last time I oiled it. Any ideas?

well my guess would be dirty or flat spot in a bearing.

there could be a part in the wrong place in the areas of...spacer, disc relationship under the spool assembly. Ring and pinion damage from setting the hook so hard on those fat smallies from this year(which is an ok thing but has proved problematic ;D)...or dirty. Over torque, uneven tension on the housing screws on the side plate, i.e, misalignment problem. Spacer, disc relationship there as well behind the side plate and or dirty. Or you may be cinching the handle thumb screw down too tight and creating a bearing thrust problem on that same shaft(x amount of inch pounds to overcome it). One model or two shows a tensioner clamp of sorts below the housing and screws under the spool, there may be a misalignment problem there or over tightened from one side to the other(the clamp).

I would think that if any shaft was bent it would do it on a continual basis.

Hope you get it fixed soon for next years smallie fest!

I'm thinking Buzzbait identified any possible problems to check for with the reel.   8) .  The only problem I've had with the Sahara that I have it the right side little plastic gold plate fell off right after I bought it.  A touch of Gorilla Glue solved that problem   :) .  How old/new id the reel?  Possible to return it to the store?

About a year and a half, only problem with all those possible problems is the only thing I can fix or have an idea  on is the the tightening or loosening of the handle screw ::) I do have it tightened as tight as I can possibly get it as I thought it may have been because it wasn't tight enough. So maybe I should back it off a tad and see what happens.

then take it from there.

Thanks I'll keep you posted.

WW I have the same problem, I have two of them and the plate fell off both already ;D

i've seen reels with bent shafts that seemed to have no problem when not under load. but, a bent spool shaft is pretty severe and is the result of pretty abusive action. so, i'm sure your right.

also, after a reel i cleaned(dissassembled/scrubbed down/relubed) for some one last night i was thinking that may be it could just be real dirty. the reel i worked on last night(AX 4000 shimano) and it seemed to have similiar issues. turns out, it was filthy: the grease was gummed up and the reel body and bearings were full of trash. when i finshed with it the reel worked great.
your reel should be realativly simple to break down and clean up. the bearings in shimano reels are also easy to disassemble for cleaning/repacking.

Gorilla Glue!  (just a touch as that stuff likes to expand)   :) .  Hope you get your reel working.

Sending that "Shamoo brownie reel" to "E" might just be what you need!, if he'd do it that is? Seems he's equipped to do the job from the quote! You can download any of the reel schematics from the Shimano website, and a few other places too if you don't have a copy in your possession already.
