Steez or Core??
« on: March 03, 2011, 02:02:17 AM »
Hey guys first post on this forum. A bit of background info first, I live in Australia and i live to fish and i have noticed that you americans love your fishing and i thought i would join up to a forum ask a bit of advice and find out a bit of information i have always wondered about.
Any way here goes my first little hunt for some advice. I'm looking at upgrading my baitcast combo in the not so far future to a carrot stix micro guide and a core or steez. I was wondering what everyone's views are on the core compared to a steez. From my minimal research i have found that the core 50mg and steez 103HA are both 5.5 oz (we are metric over here in aus, so that weight is a little foreign to me) and it appears the only real advantage with the steez is an extra 2 ball bearings. Does this affect how smooth the reel casts by much? and if so is the added advantages of the steez worth the extra money?

I know being a fishing forum you would have probably seen this question a million times before but i am after some advice and i needed an introduction to the forum and this was the best way i caould think to do it.

Cheers, Joe.

Joe, Welcome to the forum. Your question is out of my league. I'm personally a Shimano guy myself so of course I would like the Core . I'm sure either one would be great additions. Those are both lightweight. I didn't realize they were that light. I am just happy to fish with curados . Someone will be along here today with some better input.

Same here.  I'm a Shimano guy.  I do have a diawa TDX which is real nice but I cant move away from Shimano.

PS  Welcome aboard.

Joe, welcome to the site. I've been using Shimano's since the 80's. Not too long ago I called a reel repair man and asked about the Core and he said they are of very good quality(I am certain the Steez is also). I have been considering the Core myself lately. Everything i've read about them has me tuned in and now all i have to do is go hold one and at some point buy it  ;D. I've got 2 Curado's that are very old and in need of replacing.

Send em to Totoland. There's no place like home.

seeing the price difference, it isn't exactly apples to apples... i have worked on many of both, and fished with both; i own 2 steez and no cores....though i do think the cores are also really nice. steez is a much 'faster' reel. unless you have a fairly educated thumb, the steez 103 may be tricky for you; the 100 is much more tame. the core is very tame, and a very good caster; it just doesn't feel as solid too me as the steez does.

I'm a little lost but if i could find a button to thank you guys for your help i would.
But here it is in words, thanks for your replies guys.

Back to the subject, it seems there are a majority in view of the core (or shimano in general) so i think at the moment i will continue to look at getting the core, but how do the drag pressures on either reel compare? I don't know if anyone is familiar with our murray cod over here but they can get very big and can pull very hard and the only daiwa i have owned before was an exceler 100Hda i think and on my personal best cod the drag actually completely gave way and is now broken from it's first run.

E_bass fisher, i'm aware of the price difference and i was wondering in the price difference is there any difference between them apart from just the extra two bearings and a little more line capacity? Also you say you have used both what is your preference with casting? which one is smoother and which one casts that little bit further?

I really do appreciate any advice guys. Thanks a heap.

Cheers, Joe
