Triplefish fluoro
« on: May 04, 2009, 02:17:17 PM »
Mannnn,...I was really hoping that this was gonna be some good line since it is so cheap compared to most other fluoro's,..but now after using it for a little while I have to say that it really has very poor knot strength compared to the Trilene and Seaguar that I normally use.

I have lost a good number of baits the last few weeks on hooksets which I was attributing to pickeral before......And I'm sure that a few times it was something toothy that took my bait,..but now i'm convinced that most of the times,..it's actually been the Triplefish that's to blame!! >:(

I've been using 10# on my spinning reels and 12# on my baitcasters,..so it's not just a single "bad spool".   If you have some,..all that you have to do to convince yourself is tie a simple overhand knot in it and then give it a sharp tug!  It will snap at the knot with surprisingly little force.  If I do the same thing with my Seaguar Carbon Pro,..I can tug and tug until the knot is so small that I cannot even see it (I actually had to run my fingers over the line to find it afterward..) without the line breaking,....

So anyway,..I just want to put out the warning!!

(and yes,..I wet my knots! ::) ::))

I love it!!  I have not had a single problem, but I don't use that light of line.  (I use 17# most of the time, although I have a spool of 12# also).

I can cinch mine down and pull it really hard without it breaking. (Palamor knot)

Thats odd J4F,  I've never had that problem and I've fished triple fish for about 2-3 yrs.  Maybe more.  I've thrown 10-20 lb.    Never an issue.  I'd try sending it back to them or contacting them.

The knots I use are polamer and berkley knots.

I have some samples here in my office and I just tied an overhand knot in some 12# to a paper clip and could not make it break.

I sure hate to hear that your having problems as much as I have plugged it!

Two Fridays ago I caught over 30 fish in the 2 to 6 lb range with one lure on the 17 lb without ever retying.  :)

(Yea I know I am goofy for not retying)

I have the 8lb test and it is very weak to me, I keep my drag really loose, but if I tug on it by hand..Snap!!! I can't break 8lb yozuri, but the triple fish snaps with barely no pressure :(

I have it on my crankbaits 10lb and just caught a 8+ hybrid and it did great I don't know what the name of the knot is called but I double my line and wrap it 4 times and back through the loop at my fingers and cut the tags but I make sure I moisten the line as I pull the knot down on the lure. But I have had it brake on hook set and throwed something else in there and caught him again on mono line and he broke it. I did see what kind of fish it was, a bass around 6 lbs and during the fight he did come up and let me see him before he broke off. I wish I had bigger line then. but this is before the hybrid.

I went to take it off 2 more rods last night and I did find that it does have one handy advantage in that I don't need to reach for the snippers in order to remove the baits,..I just give them a quick tug and "snap".....no more line attached to the bait! :shrug

That's really amazing your experiencing that problem to me, but then again I don't use that light of a line.  I can snap any brand easily when I use line as light as 10lbs, thats why I dont.

Is it breaking and your knot is still tied to the lure, or is the knot breaking off the lure also when you pull?

If I'm "removing a lure",...there is no line left on the bait and just a little curled end on the line,..so the knot pretty much flies off into an alternative universe as far as I can tell! 8)

Sounds to me like the knot itself is slipping if its curled.

How much of a tag end do you leave?  I usually leave about 1/8", and that may be why I don't experience it.

Just for kicks and giggles try cinching it down and leave about that much and see if it breaks or slips as easy.

Also try this knot and see how it works it you haven't already.  I have not tried it yet myself because I don't have a problem now.   I saw some pro mention this the other day but cant remember who.

The knot is not slipping,..I leave almost an inch of tag end.  The rest of the knot is obviously somewhere,..but it's breaking in such a way that it seperates from the mainline and the lure most of the time!  Trust me,..I know how to tie a knot so that it will not slip or break on me with normal line.
Someone on my local forum that had a similar bad experience with it, suggested that maybe the manufacturer was clearing it out at a low price because it was really old or something.  I don't know about that,..but I have heard from enough people that I trust now on both sides of the fence so that I believe that there are some good spools and some bad spools out there!
Over and out, this is gonna be my last post on it,... I'm just not that interested anymore!

Did you buy it a on say 150 yard roll or a 300 yard roll or a 3000 yard or feet whichever the way it comes.  The reason I ask is Iv'e always heard these so  called economy size rolls were spolled of different machines and was actually a lower grade line. and that's why their able to sell it a lot cheaper.  What I'm trying to say is I don't buy economy.  I had some 10lb Trilene Vanish that done the very same thing. :flag

PS How do you spell economy :shrug

i tried vanish once. it was the worst line i have ever used. it seemed nice for about a month, then it started breaking very easy

Vanish is the line I like the least.  It cost me a night tournament once breaking on two hook sets.

I think that Vanish is a different story,..most folks that try it think that it's junk because it breaks very easily!
I do not agree with the bulk-spools being a different line.  I've been using bulk spools of Seaguar for years now and it's been great for me!  Also, most of the bulk spools of fluoro line are not THAT much cheaper than the smaller spools when you figure the cost per yard.  It's just that you waste a lot less with the bulk spools because you are not throwing away the last 20-30 yds like you often do with the smaller spools!
