Tungsten weights
« on: August 27, 2009, 04:27:10 AM »
Well I have really liked fishing a texas rig in the grass this year and lost all my heavier tungsten weights, after searching and looking because most 3/4 oz and up were  6+ dolllars for 1 weight I found this guy.
I didn't want to post until everything went through and I received them, I got them Monday, and they are nice weights for a great price.

The only thing is I did not receive and email confirmation, but they were shipped 1st class mail, I got them in 4 business days.  I think I paid roughly $13.00 with shipping for 4 3/4 oz weights, which from other sites would have been 24-28 bucks then add shipping.

I saw some other ones for pretty cheap somewhere also,....my guess is that someone in China has gone into business or something!

BTW,..one problem when Tungsten weights first came out was that they had sharp edges that would cut into your line.   That's why some brands used to have little plastic sleeves in the holes.  They eventually figured out how to make them with more rounded edges,..but that's something I'd keep an eye on with them from a new source like that Joe!

Pardon me for my ignorance but do you guys have rules against lead on the east coast or are you being very environmentally friendly?

Good deals on there.

No rules here against lead,..I just like the tungsten because it's smaller and penetrates easier.  A lot of folks claim more "feel" with tungsten weights,..but in my weedy lakes, they all feel the same.   I rarely lose weights in the waters I fish,..so the cost is not really much of a concern for me!

Well since I don't have any weeds and have several hundred pounds of lead along with a bullet sinker mold, I guess I keep on using the lead ones.  In my rocks it would prolly cost me an additional $20 per trip when I Trig. ;D

Update, I think they  have sharp edges!!!  :(

At least if you run your line around in a circle inside it. But not sure I am going to be willing to take the chance of losing a fish!!! >:(

I did catch a nice 4 lber today with it, but check my line after that and it was rough, so I kept rubbing the line around and it sdid get worse.

No rules here Jigman, but a 3/4 oz bullet weight in lead is a meal in itself  :o

Joe,might want to put some kind of internal plastic sleeve in them.

Have you looked into doing that? May save you some headaches. It's still a great deal, but sucks they are sharp on the edge.

Maybe power coating them may help take some sharpness off of it?Would anybody know if that would help?

I bet you could take your rotozip/dremmel tool with a small diamond cone grinding bit and bevel the edge of the holes on each size to help it from being sharp.

The hole is small, not sure how I would get the tool in there to wear it down.
They are nice weights, not sure where I would get a plastic sleeve to shove in there either. Any ideas?

I do have some tungsten weights without the sleeves and the edges are fine, I think there bps brand, but if we can come up with a cheap fix then it's worth rigging it paying half the cost for them.

I'm gonna take a peak today and some screw in bullet weights I have that jhave inserts in them and see if I may be able to remove them and put them in these.

Ok a thought, I just rubbed the line in circles on both ends, only the top is really scratching the line up and will cut it if you rub it around enough, the bottom side doesn't really do anything. So I am going to try putting a thick pin directly through the center and pegging it into something so I can keep the edges open, then painting it with clear nail polish to build a layer around the edges of the hole, hopefully that will hold up enough, not worried if I have to retie after a fish, just don't want to lose a fish while fighting one after fishing for a while. Atleast Until I can think of a better solution.

I would think the dremmel should work. They make accessories for that type of application and they come to a complete point.

Well for now I was able to remove some smaller inserts from some screw in weights, I put them inside and crazy glued them, hopefully they will stay in, they seem to be holding up but tomorrow will be the test.

Joe, Lowes usually has a full line of those dremmel tool accessories, if you didn't already know that :). That's where we get ours, at work.

Just a safety thought:  If I'm recalling correctly, grinding tungsten can be harmful if you breathe/injest some of the material being thrown-off by the grinder, so a word of caution when grinding/dressing-up the weights.   Probably won't take much to dress-up the weights, causing minimal "dust", but if you're doing a lot of weights I'd be cautious.

You can try grinding it,..but tungsten is a pretty brittle metal,..so it may kind of chip & flake off ratehr than grind.  If that happens you might be left with even sharper edges than before,..but those little dremel tool-bits are usually only a couple of bucks so it's probably worth trying.
Also there is no health hazard from tungsten (including tungsten dust..) that I can see,...actually one of the safer looking safety-data-sheets that I've seen! ;)

my advice is not to breathe any type of dust when your grinding!  ;)

I don't have any tungsten weights or I would try it for you.  Ive got some bits that I think will work.

Use some of those coffee straws.  they will probably work.
