Under Armour ColdGear Cold Weather Hood

Anyone use one?   My UPS guy said it works great for him when fishing in the cold (He has a tournament today ouch).

Easy to pull down below your nose and mouth and you can wear a hat over it.

I think it would make me look like a ninja fisherman too, so a nice bonus.  ;D

I personally haven't used one, but have seriously thought about getting one.  It'd be great when I'm outside with students for orienteering stuff.  The reason I've never bought one so far, is that I think it would interfere with the earpieces of my glasses.

Does look like a Ninja piece of gear   8)

I've been wanting one thats more lightweight than the hoods I have been using.  Lighter weight but will still block the wind.

I use the Redhead brand of thermals from BPS (cheaper than UA).  I have the lightweight model which works well, and wish I would have bought another set in the medium or heavy weight mat'l for the really cold days.

Found this at BPS site:
Carhartt brand

It looks more for warmer weather, but it might keep the wind off of you.  Just guessing though.

Just had a thought!   Know anyone on a fire department?   ;) .  They might have some insight as to how well the nomex hoods they wear under their helmets will provide some cold wind protection.

Carter, you out there!?   ;D

The customer reviews of the Under Armour one is really high (11) 5 out of 5 and (1) 4 out of 5 on Amazon.

"There is no way to describe how awesome this product is. It keeps your face warm (especially the ears, a major vulnerable spot for me), and it still allows for good breathing. Also, it makes you look like a ninja! People will have newfound respect for you. BUY THIS PRODUCT! "

"This item has been put to the test this week as it is presently -15F in Minneapolis. This has been incredibly effective in keeping me warm; against the odds!"

I don't own any of their gear, but do see a lot of people wearing it.  I looked at the prices of the UA when I was shopping and went with the Redhead brand.  The UA clothing is good stuff!

Does anybody know if this gear works while just standing still or do you have to be active for it to work?

I'm confused on how this works, with the material being so thin like that.

I came real close to buying one in November.I decided against it,because i didn't know how that thing works.

Save face has a hood that is made for cold weather, but I don't think it's as thick as UA hood.

Layering (and staying dry) is the trick to winter warmth.  The gear will help keep you warm when standing still, but once you start being active your body will naturally heat up some, that's one reason to layer, so that you don't become overheated, and can remove/add layers as necessary. If you start to really sweat under your clothing it can cause you to become colder.

The best way I've found is is to have a layer such as Under Armour (or other brands), then an over-layer as I call it, such as a sweater or fleece garment, then an outer shell to stop the wind, and even better if it's waterproof.   Also, wearing some type of hat will help you stay warmer, as you can lose a lot of body heat through the top of your head.  A hood with a drawstring will accomplish that plus keep your ears warm.

I don't know how the thin material works either.  I still have a hard time understanding Gortex.  Lets water vapor out, but it can't get in.   Makes me :crazy345

Yep, and I also wear a t-shirt under the base layer.  There are different "weights" to the gear also, such as light, medium, and heavy (with it being for the coldest climates).   Fleece normally comes in 3 weights also: 100= Light; 200= Medium; and 300= Heavy.  Layer and have a windproof/waterproof outer shell and you're good to go, but know the limits of the gear and yourself.

I was forced to buy something last year in perperation for our second tournament of the year. I wound up giving the UA a shot. Instead of buying both the tops and bottoms at the time, I just went with the top peice since UA was all new to me. I bought the mock turtleneck in coldgear and I will say this, It works nicely! I think their is a misconception about the UA being a miracle cure for the cold. From what I understood you need to layer like you normally would, and what I found best to do is to make sure one of those layers is a windbreaking layer. The first morning I tried UA, it was snowing and right at the freezing mark, so I had my rain suit on for my wind breaking layer and I stayed comfortable all day. The only thing that got cold was my fingers and right around my nose, simply because they were exposed.

3yr.s ago we were in the same tournament scenerio, and I like to have froze to death without it!

other options:

I also discovered fleece lined hard hat liners this past year ;D, They may be ugly but boy those things are great!

My last years partner bought the Save Phace mask and he said it works great. The head gear that is part of it doubles as something like what your interested in, check it out.

My son-in-law and Grandson spend hours hunting out of blinds and they swear by the UA products. Just make sure you have your banker with you if your buying a full suit!

Im not too concerned about the warmth really, more for wind blocking when riding down the river in the boat on a cold morning.  Something that will stay in place at 60 mph.

The regular fleece and wool balaclava seem to want to blow down off my nose and mouth because they dont fit as tight.

Sure wish Frogg Toggs made one!

If that's the case the Save Phace may be what you want. If it's cool out you can leave the hood part on.

let me double check something...later.

Actually a little more expensive than the Under Armour one.  Basically same material.
