What do you think...
« on: February 13, 2008, 10:20:18 AM »
Is this a winter thermocline?  It was only present in one of the areas we fished on the last trip.

Looks like fish under a ball of shad or something to me.

I guess your meaning the blue above the yellow though, which could possibly be that.

Jack I should have been more specific.  Yes the blue line it was present for over 100 yds along a bluff and not visible any place else on the lake that we went.

I was gonna guess muck. There is a specific name for that muck but I don't remember what it is this second...starts with a "C" I know. It grows on the bottom in the depths down to where it wont grow because of the lack of sun penetration. It wont grow TOO shallow for TOO much sun, so it's usually found say 12-40 or more foots deep. Man what's the name of that stuff!? (snap, snap, snap :scratch)

LIB "Doc" Bruce Samson, noted sonar expert and walleye pro believes that the blue stuff at the bottom is my 2 520c units' transducers interferring with each other.

mm'kay...I googled what you posted which lead to the correct answer...this is it....Chara. This is some weird stuff and may only grow in specific places in a body of water or areas of it. Has something to do with sediment, acidity and/or bad PH level.

anyway...http://www.ecy.wa.gov/Programs/wq/plants/plantid2/photopages/photo_chara.html

This stuff is in many places on our very own Lake Martin. Deep too!

Another guru has looked at the image and thinks it is a bunch of zooplankton close to the bottom of that bluff ledge.

Anyone got an Aqua View that they'd loan out for a few months?? ;D

If its zooplankton, you better mark that spot on your GPS and fish it often!

Jack that is part of the mystery.  I have fished that place 4 times this month and never saw anything like that on any sonar recording or depth finder screen while fishing.
