What would you use?
« on: August 26, 2010, 06:05:25 AM »
I went fishing with Magoo in his bitty boat.  I really can't travel light but in the attempt I made up several tubes in 1/8 and 1/4 oz.   As it turned out we did very little of that kind of fishing.  The tubes are loaded with salt and will probably ruin the hooks before I get them used up.

What would you use on the hooks to keep the salt from destroying them... petroleum jelly is the first thing that comes to my mind.

Derigging isn't much of an option.

What a question  ???   Maybe a foam or sponge type piece to surround the hook with a saturation of WD 40 ?  A flexible sleeve like tubing might be good.  Make sure and leave one untreated so you can monitor the progression.

A packing peanut ?

Best I can think of if you are concerned about the hooks being destroyed is to rinse them thoroughly then soak them in CB's Hawg Sauce.

A couple trips to Trock then it will be a non issue. ;D

Are you using black nickel plated hooks? They are less likely to rust quickly.  If now the jelly might be ok.

Stick a couple Q-tips in there with Mega Strike or smelly jelly on them.

Baking soda.

An open box of baking soda in your tackle box will stop corrosion.

Ive been using the zerust type rust inhibitor chips and they seem to be working even if I leave my hook embedded in the plastics.

I also use the 3-in-one No Rust Shields in my boxes...

Well Flambeau has the Zerust embedded in their dividers for their tackle boxes, but Bass Pro sells just the chips that you can just place in any of them.

The Zerust chips are what I've been using for about a year now and I've had no problems with rust even with leaving the trailer's on my jigs. Before when I would leave the plastic trailers on my jigs, I would notice the hooks on my jigs would be rusted a little less than a week later.
