Yee hah!!! My Drop Shot Rod has arrived!!!
« on: November 17, 2005, 01:51:31 AM »
I am so excited! It finally came!

Some of you might recall that I broke my go to all around Lamiglas competitor a few months ago (posted in another forum) when I tripped and fell. it was my clumsiest, Bill Dance blooper to date. The accident left me with a broken rod, completely my fault.

I wasn't going to wait for a replacement so I bought the exact same model. I finally got around to sending it off and I made a special request for a different rod. They contacted my via cell phone as I requested AND they were more than willing to do this. I couldn't believe it!

Being that I have grown a liking to drop shotting, I asked about the drop shot rod in the same particular series (Competitor Series) and the gal told me $75.00 (Normally $104). So I say, "Okay, that's not a bad price. What about the Drop Shot rods in the Certified Pro Series? (the next higher series) How much more for those rods?" My jaw dropped... She told me the same price. So I cemented the deal by choosing the XPS 702 Drop Shot rod. This rod is normally $170.00!!!! Here is a link to this rod series:

It arrived yesterday and it feels great in my hands. It will be even sweeter when I mate it to my Symetre? .

Oh boy, them bass had better watch out. The only thing I'm waiting on are the Drop Shot plastics I ordered from Joe S. You da the man, Joe!

The only thing I'm torn about is that I wanted to test this rod out this weekend but the Chum Salmon are a comin'. In addition, being that I'm relegated to the shore to bass fish and the prospects are next to nil without a boat this time of year, salmon might be the better ticket.?

Woe am I to be plagued with such a dilemna! Bass or Salmon?!?

If I drop shot this weekend, I'll make a report.

-Alex

BTW, I realize Lamiglas might not come to mind to you folks with the exception of fellow west coast folks, but I would recommend you guys try them out. They are reasonably priced rods with great power and sensitivity. And no, I don't work for Lamiglas, but sure wish I did!

Congrats on the new stick,..hope you catch a ton with it!

A while back my company was working on a glue application for Lamiglas,..and my boss ended up with one of their baitcaster's as a result,..it looks like a very nice rod,...
Now normally things like that don't bother me,.. but in this case, MY BOSS DOESN"T EVEN OWN A BAITCASTING REEL!!.....and he has been totally unresponsive to all my hints that I would be able to put it to good use! :-[

I am no expert and just to let you know I started drop shotting with my first rod, $19.99 walmart special rod made by Master. The first cast I ever made (with my added jig rattle to the rig) resulted in the hook up into the biggest bass I ever hooked, I was on a dock and my rod was just about pointing under the dock. To make the story short, I lost the bout with a slight millisecond of lost focus and she spit the hook with regal authority. That rod has been retired since and a nice 7' Berkeley Cherrywood rod took up this duty.

To answer your question, I think any medium to medium light action rod can do, but the subtle traits manufacturers might add to that action are:

1) A "softer" tip to make shakin' the bait a bit easier, but yet still have some backbone.
2) A slightly longer rod length, usually greater the 6.5' that usually ranges bewteen 6'9" and maybe up to 7.0'. I believe the extra rod length enables to angler to mend/move more line relatively better than a shorter rod and provide more leverage.

This is what I think, anyway as a best guess. If I learn more, I'll be sure to post it here.

First, you want a rod designed for the lightweight lines (usually 6#).
After that, you want as much sensitivity as possible (duh!  ::)...)
Since precise casting is not really necessary with the technique,...I think a 7-footer is preferable since it allows you to fling the light weights a bit further.
For me, the 7 foot ML Kistler Helium has been pretty perfect for the technique!

Thanks for the information guys...I have several rods that fit that application.  Time to dust them off and give them some use.  Most of mine are a little shorter, there custom 6'4" walleye rods which have the perfect feel and action for what I'm looking for.
